What Is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a therapeutic treatment focused on the musculoskeletal system, including the muscles, connective tissues and movement patterns of the body, to help relieve pain, reduce tension and support the body’s recovery processes.

Through tailored treatment techniques, such as trigger point therapy and myofascial release, Remedial Massage may help improve mobility and flexibility, assist with injury rehabilitation, ease muscular discomfort, support circulation and lymphatic flow, and promote greater balance and function throughout the body.

How Does Remedial Massage Differ
to Other Types Of Massage?

There are many different styles of massage, with some primarily focused on relaxation, such as Swedish massage or hot stone massage. While Remedial Massage can also feel deeply relaxing, its main focus is the assessment and treatment of pain, injury, muscular tension and movement dysfunction within the musculoskeletal system.

Throughout a Remedial Massage, the practitioner is continually assessing and responding to the body. Clients may notice that certain areas require more time and attention than others, for example the practioner may spend 5 minutes on the left side of the lumbar spine and more on the right side. This is because treatment is guided by the body’s postural imbalances and areas of tension. The aim is to treat both the localised symptoms, but equally as important, to support greater balance and function throughout the body as a whole.

Remedial Massage may support recovery, improve mobility and flexibility, and restore more balanced movement and function within the body.

Treatment does not need to be painful to be effective. At times, treatment may involve working within a level of “comfortably uncomfortable”; however, the practitioner will continually monitor the body’s response and communicate with the client throughout the session to ensure the treatment remains both effective and appropriate. The goal is to encourage the body to release tension, rather than tighten or guard against unnecessary pain.
